for a while. what does it say to black america? the head of the national urban league is here with the answer. and don't talk about cheating an irs in an e-mail. they can read them without your permission. you're in the newsroom. i'm don lemon. top of the hour, everyone. thanks for joining us. we start with incredible video of a plane with a huge crack floating in the ocean. amazedingly though everyone on board survived. a lion airplane over shot a runway and slammed into the ocean near bali, indonesia. passengers and crew stood on the wing. even got out. looks familiar, right? remember the hudson? at least one person was injured. doctors are examining other passengers now. the radio station was in the airport when the crash happened. >> what we are told here is that shortly after 3:30 p.m. local

time an incoming domestic flight over shot the run way, landed in the indian ocean off the coast and split in half. they were able to get everyone out. shades of miracle on the hudson. people jumping out of the plane, getting rescued from inside the aircraft. we saw fire engines, ambulances. there were minor injuries but a hundred passengers and crew, everyone got off safely. no one killed at least in the impact of the landing. >> more now about the plane. it was a boeing 787 about to land when the crash happened. the plane is new and the pilot was fit to fly. the cause of the crash is being investigated. we'll continue to update you. a senate aide tells cnn a sweeping deal on immigration reform will include a cut off date for indocumented immigrants who want to be citizens. details being worked out. the major points include a path

to citizenship and a provision that makes any undocumented immigrant who entered the u.s. after december 31 is ineligible for citizenship under the deal. there is also a new system to assess border security. an applicant has to pay a fine and back taxes and pass a background check. the deal is being put together by the so-called gang of 8, four democrats, four republicans. senator marco rubio talks about immigration reform tomorrow morning on state of the union beginning at 9:00 eastern. john kerry says to china, let's work together to fix the north korea problem. the secretary of state is in beijing now. he say it is chinese are calling for north korea to tone down aggressive talk and stop aggressive military action. it is kerry's first official

diplomatic trip to china. he's getting cooperation and goodwill from china though the circumstances are unfortunate. does the state department see the trip as a success? >> well, don, that's key. the chinese say they will give unprecedented cooperation in helping diffuse the situation. listen to john kerry after his meeting with the chinese foreign minister, how optimistic he seems b about working with the chinese. >> china and the united states today recommitted ourselves to find a peaceful solution. we say to kim jong un and the government of korea, of the dprk that they have an obvious choice here which is to join us in an evident to try to find a negotiated recession lugs -- resolution. >> reporter: the chinese said they will cooperate, do what

they can to get north korea to behave. a lot of times they don't do what they are doing so say. are they going to crack down on the chinese, get them to stop the threats against the u.s. and south korea and also stop the illegal flow of money and weapons helping to fuel the nuker lar program. it's anybody's guess what they are going to do now. >> good questions. another one here though. the chinese say they are on board with the americans. they have enormous influence on north koreans. will china do anything substantial to make north korea tone it down? >> it's a good question. they are telling john kerry what he wants to hear. i think u.s. officials sense a debate in china now. whether they are getting the bang for their buck of the relationship of north korea. there is an open discussion in china that their relationship with north korea is really not helping their national security interests. so it's possible that some of the fuel shipments they give north korea could be delayed.

some of the food aid they give to north korea somehow, oh, we need to wait a few weeks. they could subtly send a message to north korea that they are not happy with their behavior. we have seen statements from chinese officials in the past. now we have to see whether they are going to put the talk into action, don. >> thank you very much. british police are trying to keep protests from keet geting out of hand in london. this is trafalgar square in london. a couple hundred people gathered saying they are celebrating the death of former prime minister margaret thatcher. it is a smaller rally than expected but it is loud. the british people are divided between admiration and hatred for thatcher's legacy. she died last week. 87 years old. her funeral set for wednesday. president barack obama is trying to pressure the senate to pass tougher gun laws.

the president asked francine wheelerer, newtown connecticut mother to give the weekly address. >> our younger son, ben, age 6 sh was murdered in his classroom on december 14, four months ago this weekend. for him and all the others taken from us so violently and too soon. we have to convince the senate to come together and pass common sense gun responsibility reforms that will make our communities safer. and prevent more tragedies like the one we never thought would happen to us. >> this is the first time someone other than the president or vice president has delivered the weekly presidential address during the obama administration. the senate approved a procedural vote this week to kick start the gun control debate. in the wake of sandy hook, controversy surrounds tonight's nascar race in texas. its sponsor, the nra. we are talking with race fans live about it ahead.

last month, the two groups sealed the deal. it was up to nascar to sign off on it. it didn't have to. but because some people are now questioning the timing of this, given the serious gun debate about to begin on capitol hill, as well as some people saying that it's insensitive to some of the newtown families, that's why nascar is now saying, you know, we'll take a closer look at the way we go about approving sponsorships. for senator chris murphy of connecticut, he still wishes nascar had reconsidered before allowing this race to go through. >> they could have found another sponsor for this race. they could have waited until after the debate to have the nra sponsor a race. it's really poor timing. >> how about fans and people who paid for a ticket to the race. do they care? >> well, tens of thousands -- a couple hundred thousand people will be coming here. for the most part they care

about the race. they said this is an event. it's about family, people getting together. they say they are not paying attention to the gun debate. they don't care who is sponsoring the race. here's what some of them told me. >> i don't think it is insensitive. i think the nra has every right to sponsor a race or an event in any state they see fit. >> i'm a gun supporter. i feel like it's not the guns that kill people. it is the people that use the guns that kill people. they are there to protect you. we have one at home. i feel like they are our right to have. >> reporter: at the end of the race it is tradition for the winner to be given a couple of revolvers and fire off blanks. he's given a cowboy hat. they are going to do it again this year. senator murphy thinks it is not the right time to do this in this country given what happened four months ago. but the race will go on.

fans here are here to have a good time. >> thank you. we appreciate it. this just in to cnn. it's gruesome. 63-year-old man set on fire inside his suv. take a look at the pictures now. look at that. police in north beach, california, say a man walked up and tossed flammable liquid through the suv window last night. this happened outside a convenience store. you see it outside the 7-11. a good samaritan helped the burning man out of the car. he's in critical condition with burns on most of his body. can you imagine? police captured a suspect and booked him an attempted murder charges. residents say the suspect is a transient who frequently hangs out near the convenience store. the two men do not know each other. one of the nba's biggest and best players -- seriously hurt. for the lakers and their fans the news just got worse.

of other great players. an achilles injury ---en man. that's bad. most weekends his injury would be the biggest sports story around. we'll talk more about it in a minute. today sports fans are focused on the golf masters and the controversial call that could cost tiger woods the title though it is his own fault. rachel nichols joins us from augusta, georgia, with more. not as wind as yesterday. you have been talking to people in augusta. do most people think woods should have withdrawn after misinterpreting a rule? >> reporter: it is a complicated situation. he hit a ball into the water on 15. we have all done it. i can't do most things tiger woods can do, but i can do that. afterwards i take a drop. but millions of people aren't watching me do it. that's what happened to tiger. he took a drop and a viewer called in to the augusta country

club on the main switch board and said they think tiger violated the rules by dropping the ball too far from his original shot. so the officials looked at it while tiger was on the course. they said he thought he did nothing wrong. he was allowed to sign the score card. in the intervening hours they decided, in fact, they did make a mistake. so did tiger. they called him in this morning, had another chat. decided to assess the two-stroke penalty. some people including some golfers said he should have been disqualified or disqualified himself because he did do something wrong. david duvall, a long-time rival of tiger's on the tour said he thought tiger earned a disqualification and nick nrks faldo, three-time champion was vocal saying tiger should do, quote, the manly thing and disqualify himself. he's backtracked off the statement saying he now understands what happened.

but there will be controversy over this for quite some time. that beep, beep, beep sound is some of the masters people backing off. you know how that goes. >> beep, beep. i take it back. let me back up a little bit. how's tigerer today, rachel? >> he's making a little bit of progress. you know, he was put in a tough position. h he's ahead one on the day, but it's hard when you're starting from five back instead of three back which he was. in fact, because he actually did hit the flag stick and go into the water on the shot to begin with, if none of it happened on the one hole yesterday he would be only one stroke off the lead now. we we'll see what happens. >> i have to ask you. i know you were out on the links. let's talk about basketball.

this injury has ended some careers. is it pes miracle tick to think his career could be over? >> there are a lot of athletes with this kind of injury at this point in the career would say, you know, i'm done. that doesn't seem to be kobe. i want to show you a picture. he was sending this out over social media. this is him going into surgery. just a little bit over an hour and a half ago. he's already taking the steps to prepare this. if you want insight into his state of mind this is what he posted on facebook in the middle of the night last night. he admits it was fuelled by vicodin. still great insight into his mind state. he says the frustration is unbearable. the angerer is rage. now i'm supposed to come back from this and be the same player or better at 35? how in the world am i supposed to do that? i have no clue. maybe father time has defeated me. then again maybe not.

assaulted, photographed and again the photos posted on social media. wendy walsh joins me. some arrests have been made in california. none yet in canada. what's going on here? >> you know, it's a kitchen sink full of influences here. we are talking about young teenage boys who tend not to show a lot of compassion anymore. we have taken prayer out of the school but haven't replaced it with moral teaching. you talk about the gender question. research shows that young men and boys and teenagers believe that women have a greater comfort level with sexual activity than women report they do. the guys think it's fun. maybe they post pictures because of male bravado to brag about their conquests. the internet and people not understanding the emotional consequences of digital typing. you add the culture we are in. it's so sexual with tv; film,

songs. >> yes. let's talk about that. it sounds like when we are growing up but some of it, this is bad education. coming from movies or today's music or you said even movies and the media culture. >> you know, i tried an experiment. i suggest every parent in america do it. i went out for a jog and i needed a small ipod so i took the little one that belonged to my 14-year-old daughter. i pressed the 25 most played song list. want to see what your voice is up against? listen to the lyrics. there is not one with lyric about love, romance. one says -- a woman says i don't want romance. i want to see what's in your pants. that's a rhyme apparently. they are not getting training about compassion. since people aren't following religion well.

we do this every year and it is interesting to see the progress or regression. there have been double digit gains in employment, education and wealth. but a national urban league report finds major gaps between blacks and whites. the income gap is 60%, down seven points since 1963. the unemployment rate gap is still 52% down by just six points in half a century. it's down. should be up. we getting better at this. "redeem the dream" the annual state of black america report.

good to see you. we should be getting better. there shouldn't be small gains. it should be large gains when you think about how far we have come. >> you know, it's a two-sided coin, a tale of two cities. because while there's been progress the gap between african-americans and whites, between whites and latinos remains large, particularly when it comes to economics. income, wealth, home ownership, business formation levels. what it does is points to the challenge ahead. it points to the unfinished work. it points to what we need to do in a nation in the next generation or two. i might add that this year we were armed with pollution. we walked capitol hill this wednesday and thursday visiting members of congress. talking about two new bills. the urban jobs act and the project ready stem act. we think it's important.

to not only be diagnostic but to offer changes and solutions. we also brought the message of people from communities across the nation who want congress, want the administration, want continued emphasis on job creation and economic expansion. >> let's stick with with with with that. programs and the administration. the president has released his new budget criticized by the right and left. proposed some entitlement reforms which would mean reductions in social security and medicare. what do you think it does to the state of black america? like the expansion of childhood education, the proposal to create 20 promised zones for areas of high poverty and unemployment. like an unprecedented commitment to job training and increasing

manufacturing jobs. that got mised in much of the coverage. you can discuss entitlement reform. that's an opener by the president and on going debate. what i think is that president obama heard many of the suggestions by the national urban league and many of us about the need for. >> what krps me is the ground we lost due to the recession. >> housing. >> the home ownership declines, unemployment rate increases. the number of young people. even people with a college degree who can't find a job in their field of study. that concerns me. what i don't think we can do as a nation is say the, quote, recession, while technically

apple, gmail. they say it ruins your expectation of privacy because you are allowing a third party access to it. if it's sitting on the server of your isp for more than 180 days they figure, hey, you don't expect it to be private. they can go in there, take it and use it any time they want. i will say this. of course all of the isps, internet service providers are fighting this. if they get an administrative memo saying we want your customer information. they are sending out legal teams to say, no, get a warrant. you can't do it. now except for the sixth circuit which is ohio, michigan, tennessee and kentucky they are the only circuit court of appeals that have said you need a warrant. if you are anywhere else in the united states they can get your stuff. >> i'm sending an e-mails saying, i love the irs. it's amazing. >> exactly right. >> appreciate it. >> thanks. >> disturbing video from

shocking video of lincoln, nebraska, landed a public bus driver in legal trouble. security video shows a passenger suddenly attacked by the driver after asking a question about the bus route. the driver pummels the man with more than a dozen blows, then drags the man off the bus and leaves. afterwards the 43-year-old driver, troy fisher informed his surpri supervisors that he threw an unruly passenger off the bus. he asks his supervisor not watch the video and asks if it can be erased. he was charged with assault and fired from the job. straight ahead, we wanted to e know how hard or easy it is to buy a gun at a gun show, so we

find out. >> it is a simple idea, how easily can you buy a gun at a gun show. a cnn crew took a weekend drive. 600 miles with a pocketful of cash, hitting five gun shows in three states. tennessee, south carolina, and georgia. first stop, he will jay in north georgia. >> weren't a lot of vendors, wasn't a lot of product to buy. >> next went to tennessee for a saturday morning local gun show in a hotel convention center. it was a smith and wesson mp .45 caliber semi automatic that first caught the producer's eye. asking price, $625. >> it's a nice one, it's not brand spanking new, but -- >> make me an offer. >> cash and carry, or do i have to fill out paperwork. >> cash and carry. >> it is early. the team opts to keep looking.

ten to twenty minutes, back to the same table, negotiating for the same gun. >> 600 for that? >> this one? >> yes, box it up. >> box it up. >> it is a deal. no background check, it is not needed for a private sale. but the seller is legally required to check id like a driver's license to make sure the buyer is not from out of state. in this case, no identification asked for, no paperwork, not even a question like what are you going to do with it. in fact, neither the seller nor buyer even used a first name. if that's not surprising enough, listen to where he got the gun. >> from a police officer yesterday. >> that's right, he got it from a police officer. >> any way you'd part with any of these for a thousand? >> then they decided to up the ante. >> probably not at that point, that's very new.

after wandering the floor, our producer spots this gentleman, carrying a semi automatic rifle on his shoulder. asking price, 1200. >> strap doesn't come with it. that's one of my -- >> you're just moving it over. >> just moved it over. >> the bush master xm 15 as it is known is a semi automatic only civilian version of the m-16 u.s. military rifle. first introduced in the vietnam war, still used by u.s. troops today. >> do you have the case and stuff with you or no? >> it's out in the car, i just didn't want to carry it all around. >> i brought it to a gun show a couple weeks ago, in columbia, and the case, this is big and bulky and there were so many people in there, i kept banging people and that's why i didn't bring it with me. >> 5.56? >> yeah, either one, the .223 or
